Life's a Mist - James 4:14

Life's a Mist - James 4:14 - Proclamation Coalition

“yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” - James 4:14

The world lives by the mantra: “You only live once,” (YOLO) But it often twists that truth into a license for self-indulgence: “Life’s short, so go for it. Chase pleasure. Get it all while you still can.”

They think this is all there is.

But we know the full story. Yes, life is short. A mist. A breath. But, it doesn’t end here. This is just the beginning. Our spirit is united with Christ, and we’re promised resurrection life, a new body, and an eternal home.

That truth reframes everything.

The brevity of life isn’t meant to drive us into a pleasure grab, but into eternal purpose. The mist doesn’t mean life is meaningless. It means it’s precious. Every day is a gift. Every moment actually matters for eternity.

And yet, we often bury this truth in the corners of our minds. We get busy. Distracted. We assume we have all the time in the world. But reality shows up in unexpected ways—a funeral, a conversation with a nostalgic grandparent, the ache of watching your kids grow up too fast. It wakes us up.

So wake up today. Don’t fall asleep. (1 Thessalonians 5:6)

Live with eternity in mind.
Live in dependence on the God who holds time.
Live on mission, because others need the hope you carry.
Live generously, because nothing here lasts except what’s sown in heaven.

You don’t have to squeeze pleasure out of this life before you die. That’s not freedom. Real freedom is knowing your life is in God’s hands and eternal pleasures await us on the other side.

So don’t live like life is slipping away.

Live like the next life is just around the corner.
Live like it matters…because it does.

“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” - Psalm 90:12
