"Sweeter than Honey" - Psalm 119:103 (Fall 2021)

Psalm 119:103
How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth.

Honey has been linked to health benefits such as improving heart health and wound healing. And just like actual honey, the Word of God improves our heart and heals our deepest wounds. The word is sweeter than honey, and satisfies our hunger.

Sin may give you momentary satisfaction, but ultimately leaves you more broken and desperate than before. Christ offers satisfaction, peace, and joy that lasts forever.

God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.

Christianity is not a matter of will power and demands, it’s a matter of what we love. The world is split between two loves, the love of darkness or the love of light. To truly love the word of God, we must hate that which is of darkness. 2 verses later in this Psalm, it says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” —The psalmist delights in the words of scripture, because they are the light to his path. He desires to follow the path of the Lord, and so he delights in that which reveals the path, the word.

No one naturally hungers for God and His wisdom, instead, the sweet taste of the word is given only through Christ. Ask Him to make His word sweet to your taste, because when the Word of God be sweet to our taste, our own words also become sweet to those around us. If we are failing to consume the sweet word of God, then often our own words become harsh and bitter. But as we consume more and more of God’s word, the more tender and sweet our own words become.

When the word becomes sweet to us, so do our actions. The love of the Word, gives us a love for the World. Not a love for the darkness, but a love that casts out darkness.

Is the Word of the Lord sweet to you?
